At Griffith Avenue Practice we continually strive to expand our services to meet the needs of our patients. We are now offering a convenient Sexual Transmitted Infection (STI) screening service for men and women in our surgery from 07:30 am, by prior appointment only.
What is an STI Screening Service?
An STI Screening Service offers patients a discreet, confidentially* and non-judgmental screening service to detect and offer treatment of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis , Chlamydia and Gonorrhea .
The screen requires urine sample, blood tests, swabs and a physical examination if you have any specific concerns.
The appointment will take approx. 20 minutes.

Who will carry out the screening?
We have expertly trained male and female doctors providing this service.

What happens during appointment?
During the screening you will be asked your sexual history, medically examined and tested for STI. Male patients need to bring a “first pass” sample of urine (urinate directly into a container after waiting at least 1 hr since previously urinating, ideally overnight). Containers are available at the surgery, or you can buy sterile containers in your local pharmacy. Women patients do not need to bring a urine sample as swabs are much more sensitive at picking up infection.
Additional Information to note .
If you have symptoms of a STI (discharge, pain on urination, skin lesions in the groin) or have been advised that you have been in contact with an STI, please advise us in advance so we can discuss if our service is appropriate to your needs. Some infections, HIV, syphilis and often gonorrhea, need specialist consultant input and you will be referred for this if detected.
If you have had unprotected sex that could possibly result in HIV infection, you can get medication that can prevent infection (PEP, post-exposure prophylaxis) but this is only available from your local emergency department and must be started within 72 hours of exposure, but the earlier the better.

When will I receive the results?
Results will be received within 3-5 working days via text message or call back.
How much does the screening cost?
The cost for this service is €100.
(prepayment is required for early morning appointments).
The service will be invoiced as “enhanced medical screening” as some of these services are reimbursable on health insurance policies **
